ABOUT

The Full Story

The Deep Learning Indaba (DLI) is an organisation whose mission is to Strengthen Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in Africa. The DLI aims to address two principal aims: African participation and contribution to the advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning, and diversity in these fields of science. The Deep Learning Indaba X (DLIX) is a scaled down version of the DLI. It is a locally-organised Indaba that helps spread knowledge and builds capacity in machine learning across Africa.

The DLIX – Zambia was first organised in 2018 at the National Institute for Public Administration (NIPA) main campus. The event attracted about 70 participants both from academia and Industry. Sadly, only about 1% of the participants were female and the rest were males. In 2019, the second DLIX – Zambia was organised at the University of Zambia. At this event, the number of participants increased by about 50 % from the previous year.  The number of female participants also increased from the initial 1% to about 20%. Plans were underway to organise the third successive Indaba X last year (2020) at ZCAS University, however, these plans were curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The DLIX -Zambia is mainly targeted at people regardless of their discipline who are involved or are passionate (enthusiast) in the field of Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Deep Learning, Internet of Things, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, Robotics, etc.

The theme for this year’s Deep Learning Indaba X is Our Voice (“voice yatu”) because we believe our voice can be strong; our voice can create change; we have many different voices that must be heard. We hope that through the indaba, together, raise our voice, to be more confident, to take more ownership, and to continue working towards responsible technology.
